Biography: Gertrude Callister was born in 1903. She was the daughter of a postman from Port Erin. In 1916 her father was called up, and with money in short supply she went to work at Emmett's sock factory in Douglas. Emmetts had been set up by a local family as a philanthropic gesture to provide work for women who were in financial difficulties due to the war. It had government contracts to produce socks for soldiers, and provided a valuable safety net for those in hardship following the collapse of the Island's tourist industry. (Image ref: PG/13727).
